Mission:
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of Scout Oath and Law.

Scout Oath:
On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

Scout Law:
A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

A centennial commemoration, the Boy Scouts of America are celebrating one-hundred years of dedication and service. On February 8th, 1910 the Boy Scouts of America was incorporated and over the last century they have stayed true to their mission affecting the lives of millions of children, families and volunteers all across our country. The 2010 National Scout Jamboree is taking place at Fort A.P. Hill near Bowling Green Virginia where approximately 45,000 Scouts, leaders and staff members from all fifty states, territories and foreign countries will come together and celebrate one-hundred years of Scouting.

Fort A.P. Hills is a 76,000 acre facility idyllically located near our nation’s capital and close to many historical Civil War landmarks, creating a nostalgic site for honoring their long awaited centennial anniversary. The Boy Scouts of America will utilize 3,000 acres of this historic land to support their Jamboree program with planned activities that reflect the skills of Scouting including physical fitness, environmental conservation studies, learning about our national heritage, and the true spirit of Scouting. Scouts will enjoy days full of activities including rappelling, kayaking, rafting, sailing, trap shooting, archery, confidence courses and much more. Scouts will be able to experience a re-creation of founder Baden-Powell’s original campout on Brownsea Island, the momentous event that confirmed his idea that young boys wanted to learn about and experience nature and survival in the wilderness.

On July 26th, 2010 the Scouts will arrive at Fort A.P. Hill and transform the pastoral landscape into an exciting display of colorful tents as the Scout city emerges for nine days of celebrating founder Sir Robert Baden-Powell’s Vision. Our local Boys Scout Troops are divided into four districts designed to support Scouting in each area through training, program planning and financial support. The four districts are the Manatee, Two Rivers, Panther, and Alligator coming together to create the Southwest Florida Council. Many of our area’s dedicated troop members will be attending the exciting Jamboree celebration.
